Back in August 2017, the Forensic Science Program at UNL acquired a new piece of instrumentation to add to its arsenal of forensic-related equipment: a FARO 70m Focus 3D scanner.
This instrument is often used by forensic scientists to document crime scenes by capturing highly accurate measurements of complex objects and buildings in a 3D image. This spring, students put the instrument through its paces during their capstone project by using the FARO to document the mock crime scene set up by faculty to test their knowledge. The image associated with this story was actually taken by a senior forensic science student, Mallory Einfalt, using the FARO, and depicts the crime scene that the students encountered.
This is just one element of the comprehensive capstone experience that students have in UNL’s Forensic Science Program, which also requires students to collect evidence, process and analyze evidence, and testify as an expert witness in a mock trial.
